Tarkett brings a colourful edge to Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham

Tarkett Brings out a colourful edge to Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham

The QMC was the first purpose-built teaching hospital in the UK and is now one of the largest in Europe. Replacing five hospitals when it opened in 1978, Queens and Nottingham City Hospital NHS Trust provide hospital services to over 600,000 people and specialist services to over 2 million. With 25 operating theatres and several miles of corridors, there is an ongoing programme of refurbishment. And Tarkett has been helping to keep the hospital clean and safe looking good for many years. This tradition continued with the latest round of refurbishments where a selection of Tarkett products was once again specified. Robert Cooper of the Trust's Estates Department explained: "we have an excellent relationship with Tarkett and have used their products in many areas of the hospital in the past. We have always found them extremely hardwearing and the varitty if colour options means we can create really dramatic finishes, but still maintain levels of safety, hygine and low maintenance which are essential for Trust."

In the corridors surrounding the childern's ward, Tarkett iQ Granit was chosen as the main material, while iQ Optima was used to create a cheerful rainbow effect within the boarders. Westcote Flooring carried out the installation with a great deal of skill and craftsmanship, since it requires very precise measurements and careful welding to achieve the detailed design effect. Tarkett's iQ collection is one of the best on the market in terms of durability, design, ease of cleaning and overall lifecycle costs. The Unique surface restoration properties of the iQ range means it requires no wax no polish for life as simple dry buffing is sufficient to restore the original appearance and properties. iQ is also good for the environment, offering up to 30% maintenance cost savings alongside a 50% reduction in consumption of energy, water and chemicals needed for cleaning.

iQ granit was also specified for the older parts of the hospital. Here, corridors were laid with two colours of Granit, to create a striped effect across the width of the corridor. Dovedale, a preferred flooring contractor of the NHS Trust, carried out this part of the installation, which again required great skill and attention to detail. The result has transformed this part of the hospital to look more like a new build than a refurbishment.

For the shower blocks, Tarkett's Granit Multisafe was installed in all bare foot wet areas as its a special safety flooring designed to provide good grip for feet even when showering with soap and water. The dense, impermeable surface and well-rounded studs mean Granit Mulisafe is hygienic and easy to clean, offering excellent water resistance, low maintenance and low lifecycle cost. Installation was carried out using a specialist envelope cornering system to achieve a santitized, anti-bacterial finish.
