Installing of wallcoverings

Preparation

It is the responsibility of the installers to ensure that all relevant local standards are complied with, within the country of installation.

Walls must be clean, dry, hard, smooth, not excessively porous and not subject to rising moisture.

  • Remove old wallcoverings or loose paint
  • Sand and/or wash old paint
  • Fill any holes or cracks
  • Cover panel seams with anti-filtration tape
  • Apply a primer that is suitable for porous or non-absorbent walls.

General rules

Use rolls from the same batch in one room.
During installation: The temperature must be > 10°C and < 30°C , relative humidity < 65 %.
Install sheets upside down, edge to edge. However, should the edges be slightly damaged (dust etc.) during storage at the job site, it is best to overlap edges and re-cut.

Preparation of substrate
An examination of the substrate will enable you to determine the preparatory work required:

  • remove any lumps, fill as necessary and rub down.
  • sizing the walls will improve the bond between the wall covering and substrate.

Strip old papers and coverings, remove distempers and washes, rub down and/or wash old paintwork, fill holes and cracks.

Some fillers used ro correct surface defects may require priming if they are over absorbent. An appropriate primer should be selected depending on the absorbency of the substrate.

Installation

  • Determine the location of first strip by drawing a vertical guideline using a pencil and a plumb line.
  • Unroll and cut strips with 10 cm excess.
  • Apply a Tarkett approved, ready-to-use vinyl emulsion adhesive to the wall.
  • Spread approx. 220 g/m2 using a roller or fine toothed spatula.
  • Install first strip along the guideline.
  • Flatten by rolling over the surface progressively with a cylindrical tool.
  • Trim towards the ceiling and skirting, using a straight edged knife guided by a straight edge.
Install subsequent strips upside down and edge to edge.

Inside angles

Avoid seams in angles. Nevertheless, covering a slanting angle may require an angle cut: install following strip vertically, edges overlapping. Double-cut.

Outside angles

  • Never cut along the edge of the angle.
  • Covering outside angles poses no problem when using a recommended adhesive.
  • In case of exceptional problems, a contact adhesive can be used for double gluing. Use a plumb line while respecting above instructions for subsequent strips.

Precautions

Use rolls from the same batch and install them in sequential order by roll number. In case of defect or colour variation, install no more than 3 strips before contacting Tarkett.

Main recommendations

When installed in areas which are at risk of direct exposure to running surface water, all Somvyl and Topnyl joints must be cold
welded with V1008 liquid weld distributed by Tarkett.

Recommended adhesives

Tarkett floor and wall products are regularly subjected to testing by adhesive manufacturers to ensure their compatibility. Any subsequent adhesive recommendations are the sole responsibility of the adhesive manufacturers and the installer.

The substrate must be flat, smooth, dry, sound and moderately absorbent and not subject to subsequent rises in humidity.

The adhesive is to be applied with a spatula/spreader (coverage of 220 to 250 g/m2) for SOMVYL and TOPNYL and/or with a roller for BOUCLINE and VISUAL. Take account the climatic conditions in the area when determining the evaporation and working times to be observed (ideal temperature, 18 °C).

Note: the hanging instructions, enclosed within the packaging of Tarkett wallcoverings, give details of the methods to be used.
It is for the installer to ensure compliance with the relevant country standard for preparatory of the substrate and hanging of
wallcoverings.
