Coving the edges

Several methods of coving the edges can be used:

  1. Install onto a cove former
  2. Install over insitu coved masonry
  3. Install without a cove former by heat forming a 90° angle
  4. Install flexible preformed set-in or sit-on PVC covings or skirtings.

Coving details can be produced by forming the covering as follows:

The solutions offer many advantages:

- Very good sealing, as welds are only required at the internal and external mitres
- Good aesthetic finish, thanks to the absence of separate welded strip at the edges
- The use of curved support profiles eases maintenance and guarantees excellent hygiene.

Coving the covering to form a skirting:
This requires applying a contact adhesive to both surfaces (use a brush for the wall) observing the safety instructions for this type of adhesive and the evaporation time.

Gently heat as required and press the covering well into the angle between the floor and the wall using a warm air gun and a corner roller.

Inside angle:

- Remove excess material, starting in the corner at least 5 mm from the floor
- Press the covering into the corner using a corner roller
- Make a cut at 45° with the aid of a 45° set square.

Outside angle:

- Requires a triangular insert
- The cut in the covering must end 5 mm above the floor level
- Make a cut at a 45° on each side of the corner and remove the excess material
- The triangle insert is cut and adjusted to fit. Groove the rear to assist bending around the corner. Apply adhesive as before. Hot welding all 45° angles.

Pre-formed flexible set-in skirting
Pre-formed skirtings are adhered with a contact adhesive applied to both surfaces.
The temperature when installing should be between 18°C and 35°C.
The wall must be sound, flat, dry and free of dust. Ensure junction angle between floor and wall is straight and uniformed.

Installation pre-formed set-in skirting

- Before applying adhesive to the wall, trace a guideline along the top of the skirting. Apply a contact adhesive to both surfaces. Allow solvents to evaporate.
- Carefully position the skirting level with the guideline and roll carefully with a hand roller or a rubbing hammer designed for the purpose.

External corner
- The profile of the external mitre is cut +1.5 mm extra using a piece of metal as a guide.
- The slight excess of material obtained allows for hot welding.
- The base of the skirting is cut at a 45° angle.
- The vertical joint is hot welded.
- The base joints of the skirtings are cold welded.

Internal corner (with skirting not cut into the corner, but wrapped around)

A “V” groove must be cut in the back of the skirting to a depth of 2/3 of its thickness at the point where the two walls meet. Fitting can then continue.

Internal corner (with skirtings cut into the corner)
The skirtings are cut into the corner.
The skirtings must then be carefully scribed to the shape of internal wall to make a butt joint in the corner. The skirtings are then “V” grooved and cold welded (cold weld liquid V1008).

Rigid skirting KS61:

Preparation of the substrate
The substrate must be sound, flat, dry and clean. Old coverings must be removed. On new substrates of concrete, plaster or wood, first brush clean and then consider rubbing down and applying a suitable primer.

Fitting
It is preferable to start from a doorframe and work towards the first corner of the room. At approximately 1 metre from this corner, mark both the wall and the skirting. Measure the exact distance from the mark to the corner and transfer this measurement to the skirting. The corner mitre must be cut with a fine toothed saw and a mitre box. It is also possible to use a universal tool allowing a very precise adjustment of the angles. In this case, for outside corners, it will be necessary to add the thickness of the skirting to the measurement obtained.

Adhering
Use a contact adhesive for adhering PVC, applying it to both surfaces. Use a neoprene mastic in cartridges, applying a zigzag strip on the back of the skirting. Position the skirting whilst wet to the wall. Immediately pull it away and then re-position it.
